Cinematic Ideas

For our 3 minuet short film, we shall attempt to use many cinematic ideas to create a unique, original story.  For example, during editing, we will use a dark filter over the majority of the short movie, that will be used as a form of low key lighting, creating a typical haunted, abandoned atmosphere. (Using a horror convention to symbolise our genre) In addition to this, POV shots will fill short sections of the movie, as an original form of camera technique. These are commonly found in low budget horror/thriller films and will help to immerse the viewer further into the short movie.  Also, panning shots will help establish a clear setting for the film, while also drawing attention to key points or just helping set the scene to help the viewer feel the same emotions the protagonist may be feeling.  We will take advantage of this environment (Woods/Railway tracks/Abandoned structures) to include wipe cuts throughout the film past many trees. Evaluative Analysis

Evaluative Analysis Ethan Garvie My original intent for my project is to create a post apocalyptic thriller following the point of view of a young survivor, displaying his own personal thoughts in the wasteland. This will be achieved through a film rather than a screenplay as I believe I am able to work far better through moving image rather than writing a script and a storyboard. I will also be focusing on incorporating 'A narrative which establishes and develops a single character' as my brief. I want to improve upon sequences taken as inspiration from previous short films by using several different lenses (such as my wide lens and 50 mm for my NIKON D3200) and a variety of perspectives such as high shots, low shots, and continuous tracking shots to tell an interesting and mysterious narrative. Short Film Evaluation

Evaluation During the planning stages of our short film, we considered the ideas of gambling and risk as we wanted to try and create a thriller. We came up with the idea of using a dice to decide a person’s life choices and how lucky they are depending on what number they roll. This was perfect as a starting point as it gave us a lot of options and paths to go down during the filming to truly showcase the events that could occur in someone’s life if this was a reality.  As we had created the basic plot and style of the project, we began to think about locations. We wanted to stay away from usual locations that both of us had used before as we needed to create something unique and original. Therefore, we stayed close to my house and filmed within fields, large open areas, and by the sides of roads in order to make the film flow with other scenes involving a car.
